3,259 restaurants permanently closed in US in May, the highest number in the past year.  New restaurant openings decreased by -13% to 1,278.  Of the closings, 224 were pizza restaurants, the largest number of closures across cuisines that were tracked.

 

In Canada, there were 319 restaurants that permanently closed in May.  That’s up from 85 from in April.  There were 157 openings in May, up 28% from April.   64 of the openings were in Ontario.  In Canada, 9 Tim Hortons locations closed as well as 7 Freshslice Pizza locations.
